The Art of Building Dry Stone Walls

October 20 - 22, 2017

Joe Dinwiddie will be returning to Pine Mountain October 20-22 to teach the School's dry stone masonry workshop. This workshop will cover the basics of how to construct a dry stone wall. Students will learn how to cut and place stones in a stable and aesthetically pleasing manner. The workshop also includes presentations on the history of dry stone construction and demonstrations on various styles of dry stone masonry. Students will work on a stone wall on the School's campus, beginning with the ground course and ending with the capstone.

Joe has been a dry stone mason for the last 20 years, learning the craft from Richard Tufnell during a revival of the craft in central KY in the mid-1990's. A Kentucky native, Joe earned his bachelors in Appalachian Studies at Berea College, then his masters in Vocational Education at the University of Kentucky. Since 2001, he has taught drystone masonry workshops for adults as well as in Appalachian K-12 public schools as a teaching artist, "Drystone Joe". This workshop is designed to accommodate all skill levels.

Class size is limited to 15.

Rates
Cost for this workshop is $395, which includes tools, safety glasses, tuition, meals, snacks and lodging.The field school will begin with a 6 p.m. dinner on Friday, Oct. 20 and end with lunch on Sunday, Oct. 22.

Lodging
Students will stay in dormitory-style accommodations, with shared bath. Bed linens and towels are furnished. All Pine Mountain Settlement School buildings are smoke-free. No pets or firearms are allowed on campus.

Meals
Meals are served in the Laurel House dining hall. Vegetarian meals are available upon request.

Advance Deposit
A non-refundable advance deposit of $100.00 per person is required at the time of registration and will apply to the total cost of the event. Lodging is not guaranteed without deposit.
