Wildflower Weekend

April 19 - 21, 2013

During mid April, the Settlement School property is a wildflower wonderland, with nearly 100 species of spring wildflowers in bloom.

The weekend begins at 6 p.m. Friday with dinner followed by the program, "A Rose-Pogonia by Any Other Name," presented by Todd Rounsaville, curator of native plants and natural ecosystems at The Arboretum, state botanical garden of Kentucky. Friday's activities end with a hike where you'll listen to the sounds of the forest at night. Concurrent hikes on the School's campus will follow an early morning bird foray on Saturday and continue after lunch at Lilley Cornett Woods, an old growth forest, and on the crest of Pine Mountain along the Little Shepherd Trail. Saturday night's entertainment, the Alice Lloyd College choir from Pippa Passes Kentucky, is a featured event of the PMSS Centennial Celebration. The Voices of Appalachia will perform Sacred Harp music, the hymns and ballads of the southern Appalachian highlands, in the School's Chapel. Sunday's schedule includes a bird foray and hikes on the Dogwood or Split Rock trails on campus. The weekend concludes with lunch on Sunday.
