Pine Mountain Settlement School Receives Grants from the Kentucky Historical Society

Pine Mountain Settlement School received a technology grant and a project grant for exhibits and education programs from the Kentucky Historical Society.

The $1,000 technology grant provided for the purchase of external hard drives, a scanner, and a software program that converts scanned documents into a searchable format without the need to retype the documents. The new equipment provides back-up storage for Pine Mountain Settlement School's archives and will also help staff in creating web pages and exhibits using our rich archival history.

The $355.00 project grant provided funding to enhance our early settlers educational program. This class is offered to all ages and teaches children about the coming of white settlers to eastern Kentucky. Several items such as beeswax candles, handmade soap, and a brick of tea were purchased to illustrate what a settler coming into Kentucky needed to bring with him. This has helped our educators bring history to life as they load up a child with the supplies he would need to survive during his trip to Kentucky. The grant also provided funding for new carders to replace worn-out ones used by the children to card wool in preparation for spinning as they learn all the steps involved to make clothes.

We appreciate the support of the Kentucky Historical Society in funding both our archival work and educational work.
