Alpha Sigma Tau Volunteers

The second week of May was a busy week at Pine Mountain Settlement School. Twelve Central Michigan University students from Alpha Sigma Tau, Beta Chapter worked with School staff members for three full days. The volunteers worked in crews of four people to assist staff members in a number of projects. Tasks accomplished included the washing of windows across campus, sanding the floor in a section of the Library, cutting rags for Laurel House staff, cleaning the Library basement, clearing brush along Isaac's Creek, weeding the butterfly and vegetable gardens, and making the preparations needed for staff to treat hemlock trees to prevent hemlock woolly adelgid infestations on the James E Bickford State Nature Preserve and the Pine Mountain campus. The sorority members also assisted with a community baseball game and took part in a folk dance with students from North Oldham Middle School. School staff were impressed with both the quality and the quantity of the tasks completed by the volunteers.

In addition to their generous contributions of their hard work, the young women made a donation of $1,300 to Pine Mountain Settlement School. This contribution will be added to other generous contributions from Alpha Sigma Tau chapters and the national sorority to purchase a small bus for School programs and trips. Alpha Sigma Tau, a national sorority, has supported the School with much needed funding, supplies, and volunteer labor since the 1940s.
