We Need Your Help!
In 2008, Pine Mountain Settlement School received a Save America's Treasures grant from the National Park Service to complete ten maintenance/repair projects on the School's historic buildings. Pine Mountain Settlement School is a National Historic Landmark, the nation's highest historic designation. The Save America's Treasures grant provides half the needed funds for the ten projects. We must match the $138,000 grant dollar for dollar to complete these projects.
To date, we have completed three projects and are in the process of preparing the bid documents for a fourth project, Laurel House roof repair.
Laurel House is Pine Mountain's central building and houses the dining room, meeting rooms, main laundry, food storage areas, and lodging rooms. Most visitors who come to the School will use Laurel House. The building also serves as a community resource.
Laurel House was completed in 1940. The first Laurel House, which sat on nearly the same site as the present Laurel House, was destroyed by fire in 1939. Mary Rockwell Hook, one of the first female architects in the country, designed both the first and present structures. The roof on the current structure is the original roof, which is covered in asbestos tile. Some tiles are broken and must be replaced. We also need to remove the moss from the tiles and then apply a sealant to prolong the life of the roof.
The work to repair the roof is a specialized process. Only one contractor east of the Mississippi River does this work. After examining the roof, the contractor estimated the repair cost to be $60,000.
We need to raise $30,000 to match the $30,000 from the Save America's Treasures grant. We appreciate any contributions toward our goal. Contributions are tax-deductible as allowed by law. Please indicate that it is an SAT matching contribution.
