Invitation to Bid

Repointing Project on Two Chimneys on Historic Structure at Pine Mountain Settlement School

Pine Mountain Settlement School, a National Historic Landmark, is seeking proposals for a project to repoint sections of two chimneys at Big Log. The building is a contributing structure to the School's National Historic Landmark status. As such, the repointing material and technique must match the original. All work must meet Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Renovation of Historic Buildings.

Big Log, designed by architect Mary Rockwell Hook, was constructed in 1913 and is the first original building on the Settlement School's campus. The structure's two chimneys are cut sandstone from the area. The original mortar was a lime-and-sand mix.

In 2004, the Settlement School sponsored a preservation field school that focused on repointing the lower third of each chimney. The remaining two-thirds of each chimney still have original mortar, which is deteriorating.

This project would require the removal of the deteriorating mortar and repointing of the upper two-thirds of each chimney with mortar that is like the original material in color and composition.

Contractors are welcome to come to the campus to look at the building.

This project is part of the School's Save America's Treasures grant, which was awarded to the School by the National Park Service in 2008. Accordingly, the project is governed by all applicable federal regulations for such projects.

The deadline for receipt of proposals is 4 p.m. July 28, 2010. At that time, proposals will be opened and logged in. A review committee appointed by the Settlement School will select the best proposal. The Settlement School's mailing address is: 36 Highway 510, Bledsoe, KY 40810. Please write the words "Big Log Repointing Proposal" on the envelope. The school's e-mail address is: office@pinemountainsettlementschool.com. Please write the words "Big Log Repointing Proposal" in the subject line.
