Fall Arts Weekend — Nature Photography Workshop

October 08 - 10, 2010

Award-winning Author and Photographer to offer
Nature Photography Workshop

Dr. Thomas G. Barnes, award-winning author and nature photographer and University of Kentucky Extension Wildlife Specialist and professor in the Department of Forestry, will lead a nature photography workshop on Oct. 8 through 10 at Pine Mountain Settlement School. The workshop is part of the School's Fall Arts Weekend, which also features workshops in weaving, dry stone masonry, and hickory bark seat replacement.

The workshop, designed for all skill levels, will include an introductory session on nature photography, three field sessions, a session on equipment basics for nature photography, and critiques of participants' photographs. If time allows, Tom will discuss post-processing techniques using Adobe Photoshop software.

The Friday evening introductory session will focus on the creative side of nature photography. Topics to be covered include composition, lighting, visual design principles, and the use of color. Students will have the opportunity to share five of their photographs with the class.

On Saturday morning, the class will be in the field to photograph the sunrise over the mountains, fall color and water features. After the morning field session, participants will return to campus for a presentation on equipment basics for nature photography, the technical aspects of digital cameras, and the features to look for in a camera system.

In the afternoon, students will return to the field for another photography session. In the evening, students can download their images to share with the class. There will be an opportunity for students to offer constructive critique of each other's images.

On Sunday morning, students will return to the outdoors for a final photography session. The class will end with a slide show featuring students' photographs for participants of the Fall Arts Weekend.

Tom has written and taken photographs for several books including "Rare Wildflowers of Kentucky," "Kentucky's Last Great Places," "The Wildflowers of and Ferns of Kentucky," and "Gardening for the Birds." His next project will focus on waterfalls in Kentucky. His photographs have been used in magazines, calendars, books, and on websites throughout the world. More than 700 of his images appear on the plants.usda.gov and University of Tennessee web pages.

Participants should bring their own digital cameras and related equipment, and a stick drive with five of their photographs.
